Our Chicks.

We borrowed an incubator from our neighbor, Lynn. Eggs take 21 days to incubate. We put our first 12 eggs in 21 days before Easter. The eggs came from our chickens. We have a rooster...so we are guessing that most of the eggs are fertilized. There is only 55-85% hatching success rate with an incubator. We did not get our hopes too high! We were very excited when we saw the first few pecks in the eggs!

The incubator.

The first pecked hole...chick breaking through.

The first two chicks.  The chick on the left still has its back end stuck in the shell.  It is quite the process for the chicks to work their way out!  The chick on the right was our first chick.  The chicks stay in the incubator for 24 hours to dry off and stay warm.  It is 99-100 degrees in the incubator.
Taking the first two chicks out of the incubator and putting them in the brooder.

Chick in brooder, under heat lamp.

The kids love the chicks.

Maybe a little too much?

Look carefully.  This lucky chick got to play legos with Evan the other day!
